Description

Second round of penciling today on this rare warbird.  Its a T-6 Texan used as a Forward Air Controller (Air) (FAC-A) during the Korean War from 1950-53.  The call signs of these aircraft were always "Mosquito" and more information can be found here at the USAF Mosquito Association website: www.mosquitokorea.org/ or the USAF Museum (when the government gets the site working...) www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/

These men hold a special place in my heart as many of them blazed the trail I would follow on behind during my career, not as a pilot but on the ground.  People don't realize the USAF never really left the battlefield on the ground with the Army.  They left folks like myself there to maintain a vehicle full of radios (be it my boots and rucksack, a truck, or an armored vehicle with mounted radios) to keep a ground FAC alive and talking to the strike aircraft.  In Korea, T-6's were half the FAC equation, the other half were the jeeps collocated with Regimental and Division HQ's or on the sides of hills observing the fighting and making sure aircraft hit enemy forces and didn't hit friendly forces.  Reading through the history books, I found that the guys on the ground were the Army's best communication with higher headquarters as they relayed to the T-6, who would relay to the Division...  In that regard, nothing has changed.
